London day 2

Hey!

I already told you about my first day, here is the link to the video. Let’s talk about the second day!

Day 2
We slept okay, we were pretty tired from all the walking. It was again a beautiful day, and after a nice breakfast we decided to go to Camden Town!

image

It was so busy! We went to the stables and to all the food stands. We tasted some pretty nice street food,  like curries, wraps and falafel. There were a lot of vegan options but it was so busy, we decided to eat somewhere else.

We ended up on the roof from a pub, and I had the most amazing salad.

image

It was a salad with spinach, butternut squash, beets and nuts. I had an apple cider with it.

I never had drank apple cider before, but it was so good! Especially in the hot weather, it was all that I needed. It had a decent amount of alcohol in it, I don’t drink that often so I felt it right away, haha.

image

I bought 5 books in this second hand bookshop, in China town. China town wasn’t that much fun, but this bookstore was really nice. On our way back I started in one, it was such a good book that I finished it 2 days later.

We were both sad to go, two days was way to short to see everything. I hope we’ll be back later this year.

Drinking

Hey!

I went for my study (social behaviour studies) to the AA. And it opened my eyes. I knew that alcoholism is a real problem, one that has many sufferers. It’s a mean disease that can simply ruin your life. But this meeting, brought me to a whole knew level of knowledge and understanding.

I discovered that not drinking can be the hardest task in life, if you’re an addict. It’s not a matter of “just stop drinking” because that’s to easy to say. They need to do it, combat the fight in their minds every day. Again and again. I found a new sort of respect for the people who where sitting there, who gave me an insight in their lives.

This is not a health related topic, or maybe it is. I’m very happy that I know the struggle that addicts have, and I hope I’ll never have to fight it myself. It brought drinking in a whole new perspective. I hope that everyone, now that Christmas and New Year are coming, will think about this twice. Even in your company there can be one person struggling with addiction.

Take care and don’t forget them, they’re not alone, let them feel that.

Dinner with friends

Hey!

I love to eat with my friends. But like I said in my last post, it can be hard to eat out. Another way to avoid that could be eating at home. That’s what I did yesterday, I invited a friend and together we cooked a delicious dinner!

image

We made a few dishes; at first we made zuchinni soup. After that we had a zuchinni pasta and a salad.
I made the pasta for the second time, it’s still a succes!

The recipe for the soup;
– 4 zuchinni’s
– vegetable stock
– 2 onions
– some garlic
– around 600 ml water

Cut the onion and the garlic and put them in a big pot. Let them cook, and cut the zuchinni in little dices.
Put them in the pot, and cook for 10 minutes. Then put the water and the stock in. Cook for 20 minutes, then blend the zuchinni until you get a creamy texture. And your soup is done!

It was nice to make a meal together;  and it was fun that my friend liked my vegan food! That’s a good goal right? Eating at home can be the solution if you’re scared to dine out, or just want to save money.

Vegan meet up

Hey!

I had an awesome day today, thanks to my dear (vegan) friend Ivana .
Ivana has been a vegan for a long time, way longer then me. She helped me when I started living as a vegan. (She gave me the best recipes, and tips)

image

This is what we do whenever we meet; we eat. A lot. And I always try to make new things, which occasionally turns out terrible and sometimes awesome.

It’s nice to have a vegan friend. My ‘normal’  friends really try to understand and to think about me. But I notice that sometimes they get annoyed by me. By my eating habits. By the fact that I can’t eat everywhere, and that they always have to buy other things for me.
So it can be so nice and relaxing to talk to someone who has the same issues.
And, besides the vegan thing, Ivana is a great girl. We can have a lot of fun together.

I like the fact that I made a friend because of my principles. I made a friend who believes the same thing as I do. I really think I can say that becoming a vegan made my life a little bit brighter.

Marrakech; camel riding and visiting the souks

Hello!

Vincent and I arrived in Marrakech! Our first day is more like a first night, but still. The temperature was really great; it’s 34° while in Holland it’s 16°. I brought some skirts and dresses. Our hotel is nice, it’s in the new city. We would like to have stayed in the old city, but it was so expensive.. We arrived pretty late so on the first night we ate at the first restaurant we saw. It turned out to be really good! It was an Italian restaurant  (Little Italy) and they served amazing home made pasta’s. With the cheese on the side, so I was really happy.

image

The second day we went to the souks and got overwhelmed by all the people who wanted to sell us stuff. The taxi driver who brought us, showed us a spices store where I bought saffron lipbalm. After that he brought us to the souks. The souks were beautiful; all the colours, spices and shoes..

image

We ate our first Maroccan meal in Medina, I had a tagine with vegetables. It was so delicious! I think I’ll be eating this more then once.. In the evening we did a camel ride, but I’ll write a seperate post about that. It was amazing.
Looking forward to tomorrow!

Cooking class in Marrakech

Hello!

Today is day 5 in Marrakech, and Vincent and I decided to follow a Maroccan cooking class!

I found it online and after checking their site we decided it was a fun thing to do!
The class started at ten in the morning.
We first went to the market, to buy all our ingredients. I pointed out that I was a vegan, it was no problem.
We bought a lot of vegetables, meat for Vincent, fruit for the juice and spices for in our dishes.

image

After that, we went to the hostel where we were going to cook. The lady who was giving the class, made us Maroccan tea. (You can see it on my YouTube channel; rawjazzie) And then it was time to make the preparations
Prepare (or making your mise en place) is always the most work to do. The cutting, mixing and chopping takes a lot of time.

image

We were going to make a tagine with vegetables and lamb with a sort of gravin. We also made a mango/orange juice. I’ll be posting the recipe, so you can make it too! We made the lamb in a pressure cooker; if you use a stone tagine, it’ll take over 6 hours to cook. We didn’t have that time, so a pressure cooker is also fine.

image

It took time to cook; in between we were drinking our juice and relaxing at the rooftop terrace. It was sunny, but not too hot. After 40 minutes it was cooked and we enjoyed our meal. I liked my tagine, there were so any vegetables in it!
The woman who gave the class was very friendly and her English was good.

image

I recommend  the class because it gives you a new view into the Maroccan culture.  You’ll find out how they make all of your favorite dishes, and you learn to make them yourself. The atmosphere in the class was great; very relaxed and there was no rush. It was a very nice thing to do.

Brain training

Hello everyone!

The subject of today is; your brain!
Why? Because it’s one of the most important parts of our body, but one we always seem to forget..

Your brain is a funny thing. It’s always developing itself, and some days it’s easier to remember things then other days. Why is that?

This can have various reasons. One is food (or better; energy!) just like your body, your brain needs food in order to work properly. The food gives enough energy to remember things.
Sleep is also so important. If you regularly sleep to little; your brain is always dealing with a lack of energy. It’s harder to concentrate.

What can you do to improve your brain function? Well,  make a lot of sudoku’s. By making sudoku’s you stimulate your brain to keep thinking. Remembering faces with their name is also a good one. Try this one at a party. Try to collect as many names as possible, and try to remember them at the end of the night. Did you knew them all?

I like to train my brain remembering everything that’s on my grocery list, without peaking. The first time it was difficult, but now I’m getting good at it!
Good luck with brain training today!

Fat is bad?

Hey!

I find this subject (fat food) really interesting because everyone, and then I mean everyone, has a different opinion about it.
Are fatty foods good for you? Can you eat fat without consequences? Do fatty foods give you energy or deprive you from energy?
I think the real question is; why do you want to eat fat? And how do you feel afterwards?!

image

I believe it’s different for everyone. I always ask for a salad at work (photo above) but they always make a dressing with oil. I don’t like fatty foods. But after this salad, and the coconut oil dressing, I always have enough energy to work. So do I want to deprive myself from this fat?! No.
Does it mean I always eat fat?  Not at all. Far from that. I eat fat like I eat sugar: occasionally, if I really have the need.
I don’t believe the “the fat you eat is the fat you wear “. Yes, that might be the case when you’re only eating junkfood all the time. But some nuts or avocado? Not a problem. As long as you keep it to once /twice a week; I can’t see the problem.

What do you believe? Is the fat you eat, the fat you wear? Or do you think it’s a bit more complicated?
