Shop local and save a family

Hey!

This title seems, again, strange. But once you’ve read this post, you’ll understand what I meant.

Do you know those little flower stores? Or the bookshop, where the man behind the counter knows everything about your favorite author? I love those shops.
The people who work there, work with their hearts. They put their passion into their shop. They make long hours and work for our pleasure. They do what they love.

In this picture you see my mum. She bought some juice and fruit in this tiny store.  The man who worked there, knew where everything was and helped us find our route to the subway. Although his store was small, he helped us and thought with us.

Local stores make the economy. I believe they own the creativity. They have smart solutions, and are open for suggestions.

They are passionate about their stores and work with their hearts.

I also find the weirdest,  but cutest things in local stores. The nicest clothing, the books that I’ve never heard of, and the funniest postcards.

That’s  why I find it hard that local stores need to close. Bigger companies are taking over. They don’t share the passion. They don’t work with their heart. I support local shopping. And I hope you’ll do the same.

IKEA goes vegan

Hello!

Recently I went to the ikea to look for a new closet. I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did had a great dinner together with mum.

Did you know IKEA offers more and more vegan options? I read about it, and was curious to know if the IKEA here had this too.

What did I want to try?
Vegan meatballs!
I like the fact that IKEA spotted the need for Vegan food,  and made an effort into putting a vegan option on their menu. Of course I tried the “meatballs”. You could see all the veggies in it, it has multiple colours. The waitress in the restaurant asked me if I wanted fries or couscous, and I chose couscous.

This was what it looked like. A plate full of fresh vegan food.

But, did it taste good?!
Yes, it did! They weren’t soaky like the ones I made. They were a bit crispy and a little bit fat. They bake them in oil. The couscous was also good;  filled up with beans. I definitely be back for this.

IKEA  well done! You’re making a step in the right direction by adding this to your menu. I liked it and will be back for this.

The potato diet hype

Hey!

I think some of you (or maybe all) watch you tubers talking about their diet. (I show you my diet in this video you’ll see what I eat on a normal day ) Maybe you’ve seen High Carn Hannah, who just finished her potato diet. It turned into a massive hype, she even made it to the Australian newspaper. But why the hype? Let me explain things the way I see it.

What is the potato diet?
It’s a diet for 30 days, in which you’re only allowed to eat potatoes. Yes you can have some greens on the side, but the focus is on the potatoes.

Potatoes are your source for energy, and you’ll be eating them every meal. All kinds are allowed.

Why would you do this?
Eating one type of food can help your digestion. Your bowel has to digest only one type of food, what makes it a lot easier to digest. It can also work as a detox : it clears your body from toxins. It can help get rid of stomach pain or bad skin. Not for everyone, but for a lot of people.

Why the hype?
I think it’s because it’s something new and maybe ‘extreme’. A lot of people can not imagine to eat only potatoes for a whole month. Hannah also had great results so a lot of people are curious and want to try it themselves. I think it’s the same as it was with Freelee’s ‘banana island’  a few years ago.

Am I gonna try it?
No. I love potatoes, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t want to eat them for a whole month. I don’t see the benefits of that. I love to eat out; to eat with friends or cook with my love. I don’t think I’ll be happy to do this for such a long time. But maybe I’ll try it for a week.

What do you think about the potato diet? Healthy or not? Should I try the week version?

Hitting the gym; on the machines

Hello!

Which of you guys visit the gym? And with visiting, I mean more than 3 times a year. (After Christmas, Thanksgiving and before your holiday)

I recently got myself a new gym membership. I’m very proud of that. I run a few times a week, but I wanted to do something more than cardio.

I got my membership and I went. By myself. I was completely overwhelmed by all the machines, and in the end I only went on a bike and in the steps.
Not what I had in mind.

So, determinate to do it better, I went again. But what to use, and how? I asked it to my gym teacher. She helped me understand why machines can be helpful during your process, and now I wanted to share my new found wisdom with you.

There are a lot of machines; and it’s good to use them on certain area’s. The benefit is that with one machine you (most of the times) train different areas. So it’s always good for something. It can also help training parts that cardio isn’t training.

Going to the gym and use the machines isn’t a man thing only. If you follow the steps on the machine or in the guide, it can be very beneficial for muscle grow and a stronger body.

So don’t hesitate; ask someone to join you and just try things out. If you’re insecure like I was, you can always as an instructor to help you out. You’ve already done the hardest part: to go.

Juice fast day 4; heavy

Hey!

I’ve managed to make it till day 4! And yes, today has been a real struggle. I felt so bad during the day, I felt light headed and sick. Around noon, before work, I got a terrible headache as decided to eat something. So that’s what I did. I ate, and I slept. When I woke up I wasn’t feeling like shit anymore.

So what did I learn?
I can’t go without solid food on hard,busy days. I need some food, even if it’s just a small salad.

I’m still finishing it, but I’m not gonna fast anymore. It’ll be more like an interment fast. I’ll drink juice till around dinner and then I eat one meal. And I want it to be a light meal, so nothing cooked.

Do I experience benefits?
Yes! I wasn’t sleepy at all. I did slept some during the day but that was due to my body, not because I was feeling tired. I also feel concentrated all the time. And my belly isn’t that bloated anymore.

I’m looking to find out what tomorrow will bring. Will I feel better now I survived day 4? I’m going to the gym tomorrow, so let’s find out how that will be.

Vegan cooking; tapas night

Hey!

Tonight I had dinner at a friends house. He knows I’m a vegan, and he wanted to make dinner together. We decided to make tapas! Why tapas? Well because I like eating and this way you can eat a lot of different things. It’s also easy for him, because I’m the only vegan tonight. Not everyone wants to eat the way I do. I respect that, so eating tapas is a great idea. This is what we made;

(From left to the right)
– peppers filled with mushrooms, spring onions and spinach
– corn/kidney bean salad with cherry tomatoes
– salad with cucumber, green pepper and spinach
– filled eggs (not vegan)
– dates with pieces of  banana’s inside
– bruschetta
– no-tuna-tuna salad

And today I’ll give you the recipe for the bruschetta.
Ingredients
– bread (I like Turkish bread)
– tomatoes
– garlic
– basil
-seasoning
-olive oil

How to make
Preheat the oven at 200° . Then cut the tomatoes, you’ll only need the outside, the ‘hard’ part.
Cut your bread and put it in the oven for about 5 minutes.
Then cut the ‘hard’ part of the tomato in small dices. Throw away the wet inside.
Cut garlic into very,very tiny pieces, and do the same with the garlic. Put the garlic,basil and tomatoes in a bowl together with the olive oil. Mix it well.
Take your bread out and put some tomato salsa on top. Voila!

It’s an easy yet delicious recipe. I like to make it as an appetizer, or eat it as my lunch. You’ll always score with this one.

City tripping; Antwerpen

Hello,

5 days ago I went back to the city that stole my heart. Antwerpen. I’ve been there for over a dozen times, but arriving in the city still makes me feel like a human. It makes me feel alive.

I feel connected to this city, and every time we go there I get blown away by the beautiful architecture and the kindness of the people. And I’m lucky,  I only live 1.5 hour away from the city. So I go several times a year.

This time I went with my parents to buy myself some Christmas clothes. And I found everything I was looking for.

We also went to the Christmas market, it had so many cute things! There also was ice skating and several food stands. It was sunny.

And I felt the love. The love for the city, the love for the people. I felt so grateful for my wonderful mum and dad who took me here.

I can’t explain my love and fascination for this city. It’s just something I feel from the inside.
What is your favorite city?  Why?

I would love to hear from you guys. Antwerpen is a great city if you want to do a short (Christmas) city trip. The market gets bigger every year and you can shop everything you like at the meir. The beers are cold and in abundance, the mussels are fresh and the people kind. What more do you want?

Eating out as a vegan

Hey!

For some vegans umon us, it might be hard to eat out. I completely understand you.  I still struggle with it. Sometimes everyone wants to eat in a place where there are just no vegan options. What do you do in that kind of situation?

These are the things I always do:
1. I always check the menu online. If that’s not an option, I Google the place and look for reviews.
2. Sometimes I give my friends options for places where I know I can eat. And together we decide where we like to go. Like Chinese, Italian or Thai restaurants. It’s also handy for them; and most of the times no one is complaining about it.
3. If I’m not sure about the menu, I’ll call the restaurant and ask if they can make something for me. A lot of the times the chefs see this as a challenge, and you can always give it a try.
4. If there are no great dishes that I can eat, I’ll order 2 smaller plates. Two first courses are also really filling. And if you still want a bigger main, then you can ask if they can turn the first course into a main. That way you can always eat your salad or veggies.
5. Try to always be positive. If your friends really want to go to a place where you have less options, try to accept it. Next time it’s your choice, try to have fun anyways.

I went to the restaurant where I work (for the vegans near Amsterdam; it’s in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and it’s called Napa Italia. They serve vegan pizza!) and I asked the chefs if they could make me something nice.  And they did.

I had this vegan pizza, with a tomato salsa and a salad on top. Delicious. I learned that you can always ask if they want to make something special for you.

Vegan meet up

Hey!

I had an awesome day today, thanks to my dear (vegan) friend Ivana .
Ivana has been a vegan for a long time,way longer then me. She helped me when I started living as a vegan. (She gave me the best recipes, and tips)

This is what we do whenever we meet; we eat. A lot. And I always try to make new things, which occasionally turns out terrible and sometimes awesome.

It’s nice to have a vegan friend. My ‘normal’  friends really try to understand and to think about me. But I notice that sometimes they get annoyed by me. By my eating habits. By the fact that I can’t eat everywhere, and that they always have to buy other things for me.
So it can be so nice and relaxing to talk to someone who has the same issues.
And, besides the vegan thing, Ivana is a great girl. We can have a lot of fun together.

I like the fact that I made a friend because of my principles. I made a friend who believes the same thing as I do. I really think I can say that becoming a vegan made my life a little bit brighter.
